Hinckley & Rugby Building Society is a mutual organisation proud of its long history of over a century and a half. It offers competitive and easy-to-understand savings accounts and mortgages across England and Wales, with traditional, high-quality customer service. Owned by its members, the Society understands the importance of giving back to local communities and reinvests any profit back into the business to improve the products and services offered to its members. The Society operates nine branches and agencies across Leicestershire and Warwickshire, with its principal office in Hinckley.
London, February 6th, 2024 – SBS, a globally recognised technology partner serving over 1,500 financial institutions, announces the successful migration of Hinckley & Rugby Building Society to a cloud-based managed service built on SBS Core Banking.
With a partnership spanning more than 25 years, SBS has accompanied Hinckley & Rugby through successive stages of its digital transformation, including the introduction of green mortgages. A new chapter opened in November 2022 when both organisations embarked on a project to move the Society to a standardized, cloud-native banking engine powered by APIs, with agile enhancements to its transactional website to follow. The completion of this first phase marks the beginning of a four-phase programme that will ultimately deliver new customer front-end portals for mortgage and savings services, and a dedicated customer app.
“We are thrilled to extend our cherished partnership with SBS, a collaboration that has enriched both parties for over two decades. Working alongside SBS has enabled us to chart a digital investment program structured across four distinct phases. These phases will see us embracing a cloud-based managed service, introducing new customer front-end portals for Mortgage and Savings services, with the final phase culminating in a dedicated customer app. This marks an exciting development for Hinckley & Rugby, ensuring enhanced flexibility and functionality for our valued members. Having successfully completed the first phase, we are delighted with the unwavering support, technical expertise, and seamless collaboration that SBS has provided. We are already reaping operational benefits and eagerly anticipate the continued success of our investment program in partnership with SBS.”

Hinckley & Rugby Building Society had been running on SBS technology for more than 25 years, having built its operations on a platform that had accompanied the Society through several stages of growth, including the launch of green mortgages. By November 2022, the Society decided it was time to take a more decisive step: moving from its existing infrastructure to a standardised, cloud-native banking engine built on APIs, with the ambition of gaining the agility and resilience a modern mutual needs to serve its members well. The migration was not a straightforward lift-and-shift but a purposeful transition to a cloud-based managed service, and the Society was already realising operational benefits by the time the first phase completed. With three further phases on the roadmap, including new customer-facing portals for mortgages and savings, and ultimately a dedicated app, the programme reflects a long-term commitment by both organisations to build something that will serve Hinckley & Rugby’s members for years to come.
